Mama Hattie’s Tea Cakes

Tiffany Gleason: Jasper, GA

This is my great grandmother, Mama Hattie's, tea cake recipe. I lived beside her my whole life and spent most of my afternoons after school and summers there while my parents worked. My cousins and I grew up eating her tea cakes and could not wait to get to her house to see them on the table. This recipe was passed down from her, and it’s one I will forever cherish and pass down to my four girls.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 cup sweet milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Instructions:

  1. Cream together your butter and sugar, then add egg and cream that together.
  2. Stir in your dry ingredients.
  3. Once this is mixed, add milk and vanilla and mix until well blended.
  4. Chill in the refrigerator at least an hour but can be left overnight.
  5. When you are ready to bake, roll out the dough on a floured surface to 1/4 inch thick and cut out your cookies.
  6. Bake at 350 degrees until golden around the edges. (Be sure not to over bake!)
